More info: http://www.air-stream.org.au/aslan

ASLAN (Air-Stream LAN) is a lanning event for gaming fun and also to promote the presence of the Air Stream wireless community in the Northern suburbs of Adelaide. Approximately 6 ASLAN events are planned to be held each calendar year.

Join the ASLAN Facebook Group simply by searching ASLAN. Previous LAN pics will be up soon

ASLAN Dates:

August 28th 2010 New Venue! ASLAN 15!
Check back soon for more 2010 dates
Location
The Hillcrest Community Centre is located off Queensborough Ave in Hillcrest.

Competitions
The competitions will be announced closer to the event date but often include titles like: :

  • Air-Stream Challenge
  • Call of Duty 4
  • Crysis Wars
  • Flatout 2
  • Quake 3
  • Race Driver GRID
  • Supreme Commander
  • TrackMania Nations

Each competition has a great prize which will be announced closer to the event date.

Please note, in the interests of the general lanning atmosphere, you can only win 1 Individual Prize and 1 Team prize. This is done to give others a chance at enjoying themselves still.

ASLAN is a much smaller LAN than, for example, Valhalla and as AS members have plenty of leeching opportunity all month round these LANs are much more about gaming.

As you can see there's some definite sifnt favourites on the list above, and I'm sure with input from a largish group such as ours I'm sure we could introduce other games that would be of interest :).

Who's keen?

As you may be aware I shifted sifnt to a new host a couple of months, but I've noticed for the last couple of weeks that performance has been quite poor so I've run a couple of tests comparing it to it's old host (My home ADSL connection) and another host I've had on standby in the US for a while now, and here's the results of my non-scientific test:

Current Host:

Code:
--2010-06-24 12:56:53--  http://jumbavps.sifnt.net.au/10meg.test
Resolving jumbavps.sifnt.net.au... 113.20.3.115
Connecting to jumbavps.sifnt.net.au|113.20.3.115|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: 10000000 (9.5M) [text/plain]
Saving to: `10meg.test'

100%[===========================================================================>] 10,000,000  67.8K/s   in 88s

2010-06-24 12:58:22 (111 KB/s) - `10meg.test' saved [10000000/10000000]

Old Host (Flexo on Internode ADSL):

Code:
--2010-06-24 12:58:58--  http://flexo.sifnt.net.au/10meg.test
Resolving flexo.sifnt.net.au... 118.210.83.161
Connecting to flexo.sifnt.net.au|118.210.83.161|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: 10000000 (9.5M) [text/plain]
Saving to: `10meg.test.2'

100%[===========================================================================>] 10,000,000  95.5K/s   in 1m 41s

2010-06-24 13:00:39 (96.8 KB/s) - `10meg.test.2' saved [10000000/10000000]

Standby Host (East-coast USA, great performance shouldn't be expected):

Code:
--2010-06-24 13:14:31--  http://tdvps.sifnt.net.au/10meg.test
Resolving tdvps.sifnt.net.au... 173.234.8.172
Connecting to tdvps.sifnt.net.au|173.234.8.172|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: 10000000 (9.5M) [text/plain]
Saving to: `10meg.test'

100%[===========================================================================>] 10,000,000   497K/s   in 21s

2010-06-24 13:14:53 (465 KB/s) - `10meg.test' saved [10000000/10000000]

So, apparently my current host is performing on par or *worse* than my ADSL, and the standby host is decent. This certainly wasn't the case when I first signed up 2 months ago, at that time I was able to max out this ADSL connection (~2.3MB/s). My guess is that their service has gotten very popular and they've been oversubscribing like crazy.

I'm considering ways to test the overall performance of sifnt if I were to move it to my US host, but it's a pretty big task. For now I'm going to try to move the sifnt file-hosting there and see how it goes.

Hopefully the current host get's their act together and starts improving performance at some point!

If you're still stuck in the Web 1.0 (i.e. you're not on Facebook), that's ok, but it means you probably haven't heard.

It will be at 2pm at Heritage. Come along!

Hi All,

Klaire is organising a bit of ten-pin bowling to celebrate me getting older. [strike]Most sifnt members[/strike] Tim and Anton should have received an SMS from Kemuel stating that it was to be held tonight, but as no-one has bothered to RSVP except Kemuel (To say he wasn't going to be able to make it..... or can now???) I'm moving it to Sunday night instead.

So the raw:

- ~7:00 Sunday, 30 May, 2010 (Time to be confirmed, I'll update this once I know for sure)
- Ingle Farm Bowland
- All welcome (But please state your intentions in this thread so I know how many to expect :))!

See you there!

Sam.

Sam and I have been discussing the possibilities of heading out to the marksman firing range in the city for another round of shooting.
So I am posting a thread here to guage interest for booking purposes, and also to ask peoples preferences as to which day would suit them.
At this stage I am thinking either a friday evening, or a saturday afternoon sometime. So let me know what you think and I will get onto arranging a date.

Cheers.

I think we should try a human-only game free-for-all of original TA, just to see how it stands up to the test of time.

I'm thinking tomorrow night (Thurs)? Who'd be in? Or is another time better?

Since website the upgrade, and then the subsequent server move, a few people here have broken avatars. In a week old.sifnt.net.au (Which was used to make avatars from the old forums keep working) will also be shut down for good, so those avatars will be broken too.

If you see that your avatar is a broken image, feel free to replace or remove it. If you notice that your previously working avatar is no longer showing up, don't be offended, it just means I removed the broken image for you...feel free to put back something hosted on the File Store (The File Store URLs *should* never break (Assuming I own the sifnt.net.au domain)).

To use *any* image uploaded to the File Store as an avatar, simply append "-100.jpg" (As in 100x100 pixels; 100x100 also works. Actually there's lots of little fancy resize and reformat shortcuts I should probably document some day...) to the end of the image name and it'll automagically fit itself to a 100x100 square, for example:

Code:
http://www.sifnt.net.au/upload/get/6929/mega_bullet.gif --> http://www.sifnt.net.au/upload/get/6929/mega_bullet-100.jpg

Image --> Image

Nope, I don't support resizing animated gifs just yet...maybe one day :P

Peace.

I've added a mobile theme to the forum as well as a mod which detects the browser of a visitor. If you use the sifnt Forums with a mobile device you should have already noticed the change.

Enjoy!

Wow, the resolution of the N1 really is insane, isn't it!
